Elevated cortisol lowers thermal tolerance but results in limited cardiac remodelling in rainbow trout (<i>Oncorhynchus mykiss</i>) experiencing chronic social stress

چکیده

Juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) held in pairs form dominance hierarchies which subordinate individuals experience chronic social stress accompanied by lowered thermal tolerance (assessed as the critical maximum, CTmax). Here we tested hypothesis that elevation of circulating cortisol levels reduces trout. In support this hypothesis, recovered from for 48 h, a period sufficient to return normal baseline levels, no longer showed reduced CTmax. Further, was not restored subordinates treated with during recovery stress. To explore possible mechanisms underlying effect on CTmax, also induces cardiac remodelling trout, previously reported cortisol-treated Ventricle mass and hypertrophy markers were unaffected Picrosirius red staining revealed trend lower collagen ventricles relative dominant However, type I transcript protein turnover unaffected. Indicators function, including ventricle passive stiffness intrinsic heart rate (fH), similarly vivo fH similar between fish. Nevertheless, keeping their fish exhibited arrhythmia at significantly temperatures than CTmax trials. Thus, high result tolerance, but 5 d did greatly affect structure function.

Chronic social stress impairs thermal tolerance in the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).

When faced with limited resources, juvenile salmonid fish form dominance hierarchies that result in social stress for socially subordinate individuals. Social stress, in turn, can have consequences for the ability of the fish to respond to additional stressors such as pathogens or exposure to pollutants. In the present study, the possibility that social stress affects the ability of rainbow tro...

Cardiac remodelling in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum in response to phenylhydrazine-induced anaemia.

We examined the nature, extent and timing of cardiac ventricular remodelling in response to chronic, chemically induced anaemia in warm- and cold-acclimated rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. Chronic anaemia was induced by bi-weekly injections of phenylhydrazine hydrochloride (PHZ) and resulted in transient but large decreases in haematocrit (Hct) and haemoglobin concentration. After 2 weeks of...

Chronic social stress in rainbow trout: does it promote physiological habituation?

The effect of chronic social stress on growth, energetic substrates and hormones was tested in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. After a 14-day isolation period, the fish were paired for 8 days. In order to expose fish to chronic intermittent social contact during pairing, they were maintained in direct contact with each other during the first day. After that, a black plastic screen partition...

Fast growth in rainbow trout is correlated with a rapid decrease in post-stress cortisol concentrations

Ž . Growth rates of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss were assessed with respect to serum concentrations of cortisol, glucose, and chloride following exposure to a standardized handling Ž . stressor. Individually tagged rainbow trout Ns400, 90–250 g were reared for 10 months and the handling stressor was administered three times at approximately 3-month intervals. Fish were bled at either 1-, 3...

Autoregulation of glucocorticoid receptor by cortisol in rainbow trout hepatocytes.

We used primary cultures of trout hepatocytes and a physiological dose of cortisol (100 ng/ml), mimicking stressed levels in salmonid fish, to address the impact of glucocorticoid stimulation on glucocorticoid receptor (GR) mRNA abundance and protein content. Cortisol significantly elevated GR mRNA content over a 24-h period; this increase was abolished by actinomycin D, suggesting transcriptio...
